FALDO IS
GOING BACK TO FUTURE (By Peter
Higgs)
The Mail On Sunday
NICK FALDO has gone back to the teaching methods
of David Leadbetter to save his career.
But instead of being reunited with the guru from whom
he split acrimoniously eight months ago, Britain's greatest
golfer has enlisted the help of Leadbetter's closest
aide.
As Leadbetter said: 'It's like a
couple getting divorced and the man then marrying his
wife's sister. He's keeping it in the family.'
Faldo was at one of the lowest points of his career,
having slumped to 103rd in the world, when he asked
Mitchell Spearman to check his swing, before
the Benson and Hedges International at the Oxfordshire.
He had ended his relationship with Leadbetter after
14 years and six major championships last September
and taken on the inexperienced Chip Koehlke, an instructor
at the Nick Faldo Institute in Florida. But after missing
four cuts in his first six starts in Europe this season
his prospects of a 12th Ryder Cup appearance looked
bleak.
But Spearman spotted a flaw in his technique - and the
Englishman recorded his first top 10 finish of the year.
'Mitchell has known me for 12 years
and he put me on the right wavelength,' said
Faldo. 'He came through London just
before the B and H and I asked him to give me his five
minutes' worth.'
'He was able to add a bit more to
what I've been doing. I hope I can see Mitchell again
the week before next month's US Open.'
Leadbetter backs Spearman to put Faldo back on course.
He said 'Nick's in good hands. He'll
put him on the right road. Of all the assistants I've
had, Mitchell was my closest lieutenant and I'm sure
his teaching will be closer to the David Leadbetter
philosophy then the Nick Faldo Institute philosophy.'
